Use of tests in college (OCoLC) For more than seventy-five years, standardized tests have been considered a vital tool for gauging students’ readiness for college.

However, few people—including students, parents, teachers, and policy makers—understand how tests like the SAT or ACT are used in admissions decisions. Tests vary in style, rigor, and requirements. For example, in a closed book test, a test taker is typically required to rely upon memory to respond to specific items.

In an open-book test, though, a test taker may use one or more supplementary resources such as a reference book or notes.

Open Book Tests. When you have an open book or open note test, this means that a professor lets use of tests in college book use your textbook or notes to answer the questions.

Lansing Community College shares that professors usually design open book tests in a way that makes finding the answers difficult. Writing the test questions is one of the most helpful study techniques you can use.

Go back over each page of your textbook and look at every highlighted section. Ask yourself how the professor would ask about this content on the exam and WRITE THE QUESTION DOWN.

A blue book is literally a book with about 20 lined pages that college, graduate, and sometimes high school students use to answer test questions. The longer answer, and one that took me 15 years to really see, is that it is a tremendously better use of time to teach students how to use their resources than it is to memorize much of anything. This was true even inwhen my students could have easily used their book to look up the appropriate way to cite a source.

Afshin Gharib, a psychology professor at Dominican University of California, prefers to give open-book tests. His colleague William Phillips lets students use. One potential solution is worth exploring: open-book testing. Instead of wasting valuable time to deter cheating, open-book tests shift the onus of responsibility onto the students themselves.

They are the ones who must track down answers and page through online notes. That doesn’t, however, mean we should wave the white flag. It is also possible for some exams to be proctored, meaning that online students have to go to a testing location, such as a local community college, to take the test in a supervised environment.

In these instances, the examinations may not be open book or open note. An open-book exam is pretty self-explanatory: you’re allowed to write the exam with all of your books open.

That usually means you can bring in your notebook, textbooks, calculator—you name it. So when your professor announces that your exam will be open book, you think that you hit the jackpot, right.
